Beautiful designs, brilliant brands and addictive categories. When you're making these boards, you want to have information for those pieces available, which is why I like to make notes. For this project, I was thinking of something more round, something that flows with the space, and something that kind of belongs to this space.

We tend to be product-driven instead, so this means that we're constantly thinking about the final design and what it will look like physically when a better approach would be to fall in love with the process. Once you have all your inspiration in one place, it's a great time to share the moodboard with your team or client. It's important that everyone agrees on the general visual direction at the moodboard stage. It lets you begin the design phase confident that you're on the right track. With the right tools, an interior design project becomes an exciting journey of creativity and innovation.

Finally, a digital mood board can be easily edited, changed, and added to. Whether large or small, changes you wish to make to your mood board can be quickly applied thanks to digital tools. Adopting the same changes on a physical mood board could set a project back by weeks due to the scale and effort involved. You can share progress with team members or project stakeholders as you move through each step of the process.

I love a somewhat minimalistic home but your design board does need a little somethin’ somethin’ so here, more might just be more. You can see in this design board I worked with a consult client on, we added more decor than I did for my own home boards where I was just trying to pick paint color. You can see an example of this above, you’ll often see this as a curated shopping list type of download from designers. In this dining room design board, I didn’t remove any backgrounds, just cropped the images down to fit nicely beside each other. Nothing says you have your life together like a matching bath set.

Interior moodboards often include materials and fabrics, flooring, fittings, textures, furniture, and even artwork. Other tools include cropping, resizing, and even image background removal thanks to a smart AI function. Pinterest is an image-sharing and social media platform that enables the discovery of images and information in the form of pinboards.

Using your inspiration images as a guide, continue to search Google and your favorite home sites for the various items that will help complete the room. From lamps and tables to fabric and accessories, consider everything and try to find a picture of it. Use this as the research phase of actually finding the exact items to bring into your home. As you find various “contender” items, use the steps outlined above to save them to your computer (and don’t forget to pin them so you can revisit the live link again later!). If necessary, make various computer folders (e.g., tables, lamps, fabrics) to keep all your images straight.

The following descriptions represent different ways you may wish to present your ideas. Below I used a photo of the space I was inspired by (in this case, it’s my own design that I was recreating for a home show), but you can see how it helps inform the feeling of the design board. I’ve just added a border around it to help it feel intentional and not just an afterthought. One last note— these same software recs can be used to make a mockup of your space when you’re ready. A mockup is similar to a mood board, but usually mockups show your final selections for furniture, etc., in the arrangement they’ll be in the room.

My new focus on writing aims to extend this ethos, blending the art of making a meaningful home with the magic of storytelling. Once you’ve made a copy, you can go ahead and change the label. Like I mentioned, Canva has a ton of flexibility and is extremely user-friendly. I have the paid version for a couple of reasons — one is because I can quickly create graphics for things like Instagram stories. What seems really obvious and clear to me in my head isn’t necessarily clear or obvious to those I’m working with (including my husband). The mood board takes the guesswork out of this step and provides a clear reference to keep everyone on the same page or to make adjustments as needed.

Sometimes you don’t need to erase a background on your image but you do want to erase a logo, crop out a hand or your shoe out of the flooring photo you took. There’s two easy ways to do this in Canva without touching that background remover tool. This is her own bedroom furniture we were incorporating in the space, and her own flooring. She just sent me a photo of her bedroom and we worked with the images, removing backgrounds and using the magic eraser tool (I share how to do that in detail below!).

But my favourite way is to get a paint splotch graphic and throw it in there. There are graphics in Canva if you search for ‘paint splotch’ that you can recolor easily. You’ll know if you can recolor it if a little color block shows up in the top bar when the image is selected.

First and foremost, your mood board is a place to gather ideas and inspiration. You’ll be storing all of your inspirational images, photographs, colors, and textiles that you’ve unearthed from a wide range of sources. For those working in teams, a mood board is a great collection point for all of the team’s ideas. Alternately, you can create design boards without removing backgrounds.
